New York
New York AIT requirements.
Source summary · Checked 2026-10-04
New York accepts an approved AIT internship or qualifying administrative field experience. The standard internship is 12 months; specific reductions may apply. The board decides eligibility, and written approval is required before an internship starts.
Choose the right pathway
Applicants ordinarily need to be 21 or older, satisfy character review, and hold a bachelor’s or higher degree with the required coursework. Qualification 4 can be met through an internship or qualifying field experience; these are alternatives. AITpath lessons and tasks do not replace required academic credits.
Internship timing and approval
DOH describes the standard internship as 52 weeks / 1,820 hours and a reduced internship as 26 weeks / 910 hours. Reductions require the applicable education or experience conditions and board acceptance. Submit Addendum A at least eight weeks before the proposed start. Training begun before written approval is not accepted. The qualifications page allows consideration of part-time internships, with all internship hours completed within two years.
Qualifying field experience
The standard alternative is two years of full-time qualifying administrative work within the preceding five years, above department-head level and no higher than Administrator-of-Record. Duties must include daily management decisions affecting multiple major departments. An Assistant Administrator title or NHA task approval alone does not establish eligibility. Use Addendum B and the required employment evidence; approved reductions or substitutions may apply.
Supervision and documentation
The internship requires an eligible facility and qualified preceptor who is its Administrator-of-Record. The plan includes department modules and an organization chart. A trainer prepares a summary after each module; the preceptor reviews progress and retains the summaries. Completion requires signed Addendum A and all module summaries. Changes to an approved plan require board approval.
Exams and your next step
